Animal rehabilitation - What you need to know

The practice of animal osteopathy is increasingly recognised and used in the physiotherapy of animals, whether that be domestic pets, farm animals or wild species. This holistic medical discipline concentrates on the restoration of the mobility, health and welfare of animals using various non-invasive techniques specifically designed for animal patients. The exploration of the way in which animal osteopathy can play a fundamental role in the rehabilitation and recovery process of animals takes on great importance for animal owners, breeders, veterinary practitioners as well as for anyone who cares about animal welfare.

Manon Turbe, your Ontario-based osteopath, invites you to a complete exploration of the applications of this discipline, by shedding light on the situations in which it can prove particularly beneficial to our valued companions.

In which cases do we talk about animal rehabilitation?

Animal rehabilitation covers all treatments practised on animals (most often wild animals) with the aim of returning them to their natural habitat. Animal rehabilitation can take place in a variety of circumstances: rescue of an injured wild animal, physiotherapy after an operation/wound, animal pathology, physiotherapy after violent effort.  The rehabilitation of an animal will therefore be used to make an animal more comfortable depending on the pathology/problem identified during the consultation. The objective being an improvement (in the short or long term) in the welfare and mobility of the animal in question. The question of animal rehabilitation arises in different circumstances:

Orphaned animals
Wounded animals
Abandoned animals
Sick animals

In the case of domestic animals, rehabilitation can prove useful in several cases: preparing for a race for horses, physiotherapy after an operation, difficulties in reproduction, old age, followed by balanced growth for young animals and many other reasons.

How does an animal osteopath support you in the rehabilitation process?

The role of an animal osteopath comes fully within the scope of the search for animal welfare. The osteopath plays an active role in the rehabilitation of an animal by working on several points. The holistic approach of the osteopath considers many aspects of an animal, not just the physical symptom (e.g. difficulty in moving around). Manon Turbe supports you in finding the underlying cause of animal health problems through several different phases of analysis.

  • Initial assessment of the animal via an in-depth examination
  • Diagnosis and discussion with the owner where applicable
  • Osteopathic treatment using gentle manual techniques.

There are many types of manipulation which may include: articular
manipulation, stretching, massages, palpation, cranio-sacral therapy, deep tissue techniques, etc.

  • Treatment plan for the animal, if it has an owner
  • Personalised monitoring over time
  • Assessment of improvements
